Ecclesiastes 2:12-17
Welcome to your sophomore week of our search for fulfillment with the Qoheleth. I say it is our “sophomore” week because it is our second week to look at one of the specific ways that the Qoheleth searches for meaning or fulfillment. In our freshman week we considered his test of pleasure, which resonates so richly with American and western societies. But alas, like freshman often do, our first test ended in failure.
So we enter as sophomores, with a measure of experience under our belts, ready to test our next candidate: wisdom. Perhaps, if we grow wise enough, we can solve this sense of longing; we can satisfy this craving for something more in our soul; something that lasts beyond time. After all, one of the Greek roots for sophomore is “σοφός” which means wisdom. So let's find out.
