When it comes to preparing for marriage, you have to know why marriage exists in the first place. If you try to force fit a round peg in a square hole, it won’t work. Something has to give. With marriage, if you try and force it into being something it isn’t meant to be, something’s going to give. Unfortunately, that’s what happens to most marriages that fail. It’s why we have the increasingly common idea that marriage is a seasonal thing. That’s redefining marriage around our fallenness rather than our function.

 

It’s like the familiar image of a fish out of water. In water, a fish thrives. Out of water, he dies. So what is marriage supposed to be? Why does it exist in the first place? To answer that we’ll look at a creation passage from Genesis, and a redemption passage from Ephesians.
